Happy New Year’s / The Knitters Life book

My knitting friend Grace gave me a book for Christmas called “The Knitter’s Life List”  by Gwen W. Steege.

This book is a fun read and you can learn a lot a long the way.  In fact, if it were not for this book I would have continued to knit uneven (twisted) stitches when making the simple stocking stitch pattern.  It was not something that anybody really noticed, nor did I, till I knit a top down cardigan.  The top of the cardigan was knit in the round and the rest was regular knitting so it wasn’t apparent till finished.  I noticed there was a distinct but subtle difference on the two styles of knitting.   I had been trying to figure it out for a very long time till this book set me straight, yay!  The info is on page 67, check it out!!!  The book that she is referring to is called Confessions of a Knitting Heretic by Annie Modesitt.  I ordered this book on Amazon and should be here by the new year.

I wish everyone a most wonderfuly creative and happy New Year!

Another Christmas stocking!

Made another Christmas stocking for my good friend Marge.  This stocking is crocheted, and made with super bulky yarn.  You can’t tell by the pictures but it came out huge!!! About 36 inches long, just crazy.  If I ever make another one it will be with worsted weight yarn.  The ruffle tape is from Lion Brand.  This tape spreads open as you crochet or (knit) with it, very clever, and can only be bought on their website apparently.  As a comparison, the one in the middle is the one just made and the doggie stocking that I posted about last time is on the right.  Big difference in size, Lol.  The one on the right is Marge’s own stocking…..she took these pictures and emailed them to me because I forgot to take pictures before I mailed her stocking.  Marge is using it as a decoration instead of using it for gifts because of its size.

Happy knitting  : )

knitting headbands

Hi all, it’s been awhile since the last posting…..just the holidays getting in the way and stuff.  Part of it is studying for a test to become a notary public…..will see how that goes.

The owner of a gallery asked if I might be interested in teaching a crochet class in town.  Not many hours to start with but could be fun or frustrating.  Anybody teaching a crochet or knitting class?…..could use a few tips.

I have been working on headbands lately, very quick, and a fun knit….if you like fun!  These will make great last minute gifts.  This white headband is 18′ in diameter and 5 inches wide.  I just used acrylic yarn here.

Went for a drive today to Mt, Laguna in Southern California.  Lots of snow there, just beautiful!!!   The pics do not do it justice.

I hope everyone has a wonderful Christmas and a happy knitting time : )

Finished Lola’s Christmas stocking

The stocking turned out larger than I thought and the duplicate stitch required for the bone and paw stitching are a bit tricky (not my thing).  I like it over all and hope that my friend likes it too.

Believe it or not I have never knitted a Christmas stocking before.  It took my friend to get me motivated to knit one for her.  Yes, I have knitted socks before, but never just one.  What I found was that knitting just one sock is a lot more fun…..just the thought of knitting a pair of socks is boring to me.  A suggestion for a new sock knitter would be to try a Christmas stocking first because it’s only one sock and your usually knitting with worsted weight yarn as well.  Give it a go!!!

I meant to post this blog yesterday but life got in the way.  For Thanksgiving we went to are our future daughter-in-law’s parent’s home in Palm Springs area (tuff, huh?) …..A  fun and eventful time for all.  The weather was beautiful so today we went to the driving range for a little practice time (I’m terrible), but was still fun!

I hope all of you had a very warm and Happy Thanksgiving.   Safe travels!  happy knitting ; )

Doggie Christmas Stocking for Lola! & Wendy Knits lace book

I have a good friend Marge who asked me to knit a christmas stocking for their new addition to the family.  The new addition happens to be a cute boxer named Lola!  My friend knows how to crochet but this pattern happens to be a knit pattern.

As you can see on the left side, the cuff portion will be folded in half and sewn in later.  Working on the leg now. (doesn’t look like much now) I am suppose to stitch a doggie bone and paws on the stocking but I’m not very good at stitchery on knitted fabric.

Ordered this book by Wendy Knits and received it last week.  Her book is beautifully done.  Lots of visual techniques  for stitch work and tricks to help you along with the patterns you choose to venture into, like for casting on and binding off.  Even tricks for helping keep your place on each row.  There is something for everybody, whether a beginner or advanced knitter.  There are scarves, shawls, mittens, gloves, sweaters, even an afghan all with lace techniques.  20 projects in all! Looking forward to knitting from this book.   Sure hope you are enjoying the Fall Season.

Happy knitting : )
