Knit Spiral Scarf

A little something to keep me busy for a day and a half.  The pattern is from the One Skein Wonders book, one of my favorite books.  The pattern is called Twister Spiral Neckscarf by Judy Warde.  I’ve seen this scarf as a sample in yarn stores and thought I’d give it a try.   Super easy mindless knitting if you know how to do short rows,  and cleverly done!  The yarn used is called Ty-Dy, made of 100% cotton.  Wanted to use this yarn up and thought it would be a good choice for the pattern. I’m happy with the choice.

Hope your Mothers Day was wonderful.  Happy knitting : )

Turn-Again Tote FUN!

This is another pattern I have been wanting to try for a few years.  I first saw this pattern at Stitches West in the Bay Area called the Turn-Again Tote.  The skill level is for advanced beginner.   Here’s the link to Patternfish.com where you can buy this pattern…..http://www.patternfish.com/patterns/2053

unfinished tote

I used fisherman’s wool by Lion Brand Yarn.  It felts wonderfully!  Here you will see that the tote is almost finished….(looks a little strange) and of course not felted yet!

The last two pictures are the finished product, (felted!)  Even my husband like the way it turned out.  The handles are leather straps that are sewn on (after felting).  A fairly quick knit.  I used two circular needles of the same size, one for each colorway.  The reason I waited so long to knit this tote is because I have a front load washing machine and was not sure if it would felt properly.  To my surprize…..it felts beautifully!  The tote has 8 pockets to fill with yarn stuff.

Our oldest son is getting married this coming Sunday to a wonderful girl who we love.  Lots to get ready for!  I had a cortisone shot today in my right hand for inflammation issues, so this might be a good time to take a break from knitting for a few days.

Happy knitting  : )

The Artist in You!

While having my morning coffee and checking emails I came across The Knitting Daily email which had a review  http://www.interweavestore.com/Knitting/Books/Pop-Knitting.html?SessionThemeID=35&a=kp120503 about a new book called Pop Knitting.  Check it out here!

I want to encourage you (if you haven’t done so already) to break out of your knitting or crochet usual…… and try something completely different.  We all get stuck in a rut sometimes but we don’t really learn that way.  It’s good to stretch our brains, even just a little!

It’s funny that the title on the Knitting Daily post was called….Knit Like An Artist.  You see…..I enjoy painting as well and have been reading a book called Capturing Radiant Light & Color by Susan Sarback.  The book is getting my creative juices flowing again.  It is about looking at everything around you with new eyes…..seeing colors in a still life or landscape, etc, that you have never seen before.  I love impressionist paintings like Claude Monet and Henry Hensche, they painted a simple flower with such brilliance.  I would love to see and paint like that some day.

So getting back to the book, Pop Knitting……though I haven’t read it (not quite out yet) one can only imagine what we could learn from a book like this.  But really trying anything out of your comfort zone……like felting or maybe knitting a tote bag, socks, or possibly a tie for the guy in your life (or for you) Maybe you will find that you rather enjoy creating your own knitting and crochet patterns.  Try a little yarn bombing latey? ha, ha.  The point is to stretch yourself a little or a lot in what ever you do.

Be creative….step outside the box and have fun!…..happy knitting : )

Shawl Kit…..and…..Yarn Bombing! (Not related)

Last Christmas 2011 I received a gift from my son and future daughter-in-law…….an Artyarns kit.

Just finished!  http://artyarns.com  has some beautiful yarns and this kit is not so bad either!  This colorway combination is called Purple Velvet.  The yarn has glitter and beads woven into silk fibers (very soft).  It turned out smaller than intended (used smaller needles).  The shawl is knit from the top down (love it) and a pretty easy pattern to knit from.  Oh….. and the kit comes with a pattern to knit or crochet, your choice!  Mine is knitted of course : )

On a different subject, this morning on the SD morning news http://www.fox5sandiego.com.  Yarn Bombing or Yarn Graffiti has made an impact in the Clairemont, Ca. area.   A man has knitted about 100 flower leaves for stop signs (really quite pretty).  The law requires that they must come down but a city council member is working hard to see that the yarn bombing stays in place (yay).

I would love to hear reader’s opinions on this……in a way this is graffiti but then again is it art?  Should it stay up?  Have you heard of Yarn Bombing?  Would you do it?  If you check out the Fox 5 link above, scroll down to almost the bottom, you will see a video link.

Happy knitting : )

I see Looming/Weaving in my future…..maybe….

I am very interested in getting a Loom.  When I was a child I loved to make pot holders with my little square loom.  I’m sure you remember those too!  But now I would like to try my hand at a small table loom…..not a large one just big enough for weaving scarfs, purses, hats and maybe even a blanket.  It should be a great way to use up some of my endless yarn stash.

I’m looking into the Cricket Loom. If any of you know anything about them I would appreciate your input as I know very little about table looms.

Today, I’m getting ready for my sister’s visit and will pick her up from the airport tonight.  We will do our usual which is to shop and talk till we drop.  Oh yeah….Had a nice Easter….sang at three church services and went on a bike ride at the lakes in the afternoon.  Hope your Easter was meaningful and great!

Happy Knitting : )
